Khevsureti is a very remote and interesting region with beautiful mountains. waterfalls, lakes and interesting architecure. Kazbegi area is not as remote as Khevsureti but it is equally as beautifull with famous Mount Kazbegi, Gergeti village and many other places of interest.
If you are looking for best Khevsureti tours as well as best Kazbegi tours this is the one which offers both regions in one itinerary and covers main places of interest. The tour includes transportation to the destinations with a 4wd drive car, a guide, overnight stays, dinner and lunch. The tour includes 4 overnight stays in total five days but it can be customized.
Day 1 - The drive to Abudelauri lakes from Tbilisi takes less than three hours. The road is good except for the last ten kilometers which is being fixed. To do the Abudelauri lakes hike, guests along with the guide will drive to Roshka village in Khevsureti region via Jhinvali lake and start the hike. Hike is of moderate difficulty and the views on lakes are awesome. In total there are three lakes and at first the guests will get to the highest one which is white, then descend down to the blue and the green ones. In total the hike back and forth takes around four to five hours depending on pace. After finishing the hike the guests will stay overnight in a guesthouse in Gudani village where the hostess serves the best dinner.
Day 2 - Next day the guests will head to Shatili via Datvijvari pass. The highest point of the pass is 2800 meters above the sea level which makes the Shatili, Mutso and Ardoti villages unaccessible during late autumn, winter and early spring months. Shatili is a beautiful village with permanent residents and is famous for the fortress which dates back to mid centuries. Mutso village located in 10 kms from Shatili is a very special place with the fortress located on a mountain peak with the best views in the whole area. The fortress was built from black, volcanic stones and perfectly fits the landscape. The hike up to the fotress takes 20 minutes one way and is very steep but worth the effort. One more very important and interesting place located in Khevsureti is Anatori burial vaults which will also be visited by the guests. Anatori was a village residents of which died due to the plague and the burial vaults still house the bones and the skeletons of the village residents. It is a very interesting place to see located in three kilometers from Shatili on the way to Mutso. Throughout the tour guests will visit Ardoti village as well and will enjoy the beautiful views on Tebulo mountain. After lunch in Ardoti the tour will head back to Gudani village for an overnight stay and dinner.
Day 3 - In the morning guests will head from Khevsureti to Kazbegi region. Except for the drive it is also possible to trek from Shatili to Juta, the village in Kazbegi area, while the trail goes through abudeluri lakes but this is the part of another tour, for people with serious fitness. Hiking in Kazbegi area will start with a hike to Truso Gorge, not far from Kazbegi. Truso gorge is a beautiful place with scenic views and a mineral lake. The hike to the lake and back takes around three hours. Overnight stay will be done in kazbegi, in a guesthouse with dinner included.
Day 4 - On this day guests will hike to Gergeti Trinity Chuch in Kazbegi which is a must visit place. The hiking back and forth will take around three hours but it is definitely worth it. The monastery dates back to the 14th century while the monks still live there. After the church hike, guests will head towards the border of Georgia and Russia and will hike to Gveleti waterfalls. Upon request guests can be taken to the border, deep inside the Dariali gorge, to see the area where the terrioty of our country ends. Overnight in Kazbegi, in a guesthouse with dinner included.
Day 5 - This is the last day of the tour and on this day the guests will head to Tbilisi. The distance from Tbilisi to Kazbegi equals to 180 kms so the day tours are very popular as well. On this day the guests will visit so called 'Friendship monument' which actually is an occupation monument underlining two hundred years of Russian and Soviet rule. One more stop will be done in Ananuri to see the fortress and the surrrounding area.
Tips for travelers
Best time to visit Kazbegi and Khevsureti regions is late spring, summer and early autumn.
Camping in Kazbegi and Khevsureti areas is very safe and no permit is needed.
Best place to stay in Kazbegi is Rooms hotel and the price during the high season equals to around 200 usd per night.
